Continued IT skills demand in Scotland, with UK vacancies at record high
The KPMG and REC, UK Report on Jobs, reported that the latest set of labour market data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed in the three months to January 2019, the number of job vacancies across the UK hit a record 870,000. This showed an increase of 5.6% (46,000 more vacancies) from the same period last year, and the highest level since early 2001.
Furthermore, the unemployment rate currently sits at 4%, the lowest since 1975. Subsequently, the ratio of unemployed people to vacancies stood at approximately 1.6, the lowest since this data was available in early-2001.
With high demand for staff and fewer people to fill job roles, the most recent ONS figures show that this strong demand has caused an increase in pay, showing earnings growth at a ten-year high.
Increased demand for IT staff in Scotland.
According to the latest Royal Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs, permanent and temporary staff appointments showed significant growth in Scotland, an increase higher than that shown across the UK as a whole.
Demand for permanent staff across Scotland saw the most in-demand roles within the IT & Computing sector. Survey data also confirmed an increase in IT and Computing temporary job vacancies in Scotland throughout February.
